Thank you so much for this post. I read it a week before my 1/2 marathon and wanted to make sure I came back to thank you. During my half I thought to myself, approximately 13 times, to focus on the mile I was in. That message was a godsend. Thank you for your most timely post...it was a great half!

The research on this issue is crystal clear. If you do not start consuming your main calorie source by 1.86 miles into the marathon, then you are extremely likely to have a blood sugar crash later in the marathon.

I can't tell you how much I needed to read this. With the marathon this weekend this couldn't have been more perfect timing. I have thought about this before but I see how true it really is. I have 5 days to reprogram my Garmin to only show current mile... I will make this happen.

Loved this post, I do have a question. At the end you stated starting to drink and fuel within the first 2 miles of a marathon? Perhaps it is because I eat a little closer to the start, but I usually don't fuel until mile 5. Is that bad? I would call my self an intermediate runner, I'm headed into marathon #9 on Saturday. Thanks for the tips!

Great post...social running earns it's place in training plans. I never used to like running with people but I try and do at least 2-3 social runs a month. Honestly I don't think it slows progress at all, it's time on your feet, running, and talking to people who are interested in the same things. You may not break any speed barriers but you might find some new places to run, find some new methods other people try, and might learn something along the way, that isn't slowed progress. And either way...slow progress is still progress.

I do not stretch before running, never have. Sometimes I do a slow warm up, more often I don't. I guess I'm lucky in that I usually don't feel the need for one. I've talked to other runners who say they don't feel like they can "really run" until a few miles in, but I'm not one of them. I generally stretch afterwards, combining dynamic moves with more static ones. YMMV!

I actually just purchased a new book about stretching, I have been struggling with stretching the right things and over/under stretching things. It's a fine line I feel like, especially for runners, if something isn't quite right... we feel it!
